Treehugger flooded by anti-green commenters?

Postby charles17 on Sun Nov 01, 2009 5:36 am

Is it just me, or is Treehugger being flooded by anti-environmental commenters? It seems like every article I look at or comment on there are way more people than before that are belligerent and don't care about the environment... Yet they are visiting this site and taking the time to make negative comments.

And I do mean way more... It used to be that most of the comments were encouraging about being green, maybe some tidbit about how individual people were applying environmentalism in their own lives... Now I see many comments that denounce the "belief" in global warming, how democrats are stupid, and republican leaders make so much sense...

I hate to sound conspiracy-y... But I'm worried that either there happen to be enough backwards FOX-viewing, environment-hating individuals that happen to enjoy posting negative comments on Treehugger.com that don't make sense... Or what seems more likely (because this alternative wouldn't be by chance) there's a group that is trying to skew what is apparently the public opinion on the site. I'm reminded of recent stories where fake grassroots organizations were funded by groups that profited from the destruction of the environment...

Again, I don't want to sound conspiracy-y (Not that there isn't precedent for this sort of thing)... But I just wanted to throw that out there. Perhaps Treehugger IT people can do IP traces on all these negative commenters? I dunno... I just don't want to stand by while our beloved site gets overrun by backwards, reason-hating, global warming deniers, especially IF they represent a concerted effort.

I MAY just be paranoid, but has anyone else noticed this trend?

Yes, and in this case the source is easy to pinpoint... a new campaign lauched by the oil and coal industries are paying bloggers, etc. to work on their behalf, including posting to forums like this one. They are pulling out all the stops to try and keep the Waxman Markey climate bill from passing. I personally just donate a little more money to anti-oil/coal causes every time I run across one of these posters.

It seems to me that when you start drawing in-group/out-group lines like that, you're bound to cause problems.

Pretty soon you're going to have to kill dissidents. (Which, if your philosophy espouses it, is not necessarily a bad thing -- but if your philosophy is that you believe in freedom, civil rights, etc. it's a problem.)

I think we should reach out to the people interested in helping the environment. That's it -- period. No other requirements. I don't really care if they believe in global warming, or wanting to use "green" products. All that matters to me is that they're interested in helping the problem.

Regarding some vast industry conspiracy to squash TreeHugger: don't you think they'd just buy ad time on TV networks instead, since for every person on this site there are 1,000 who believe what they see on TV and are by nature apathetic?
