Well a 800 number is every phone phreaks wet dream. Why? Because they are toll free of course! So on with the file There are two types of 800's INWATS and OUTWATS first we will deal with Inwats. The 800 number in it's entirety is a SAC or Special Area Code, which goes into the ranks with 510, 610, 700, 710, 800, 810, 900, and 910. The other SAC's will be dealt with in a later file as they are not as important to our cause as the 800 number which deserves a file all to itself! INWATS or INWARD WATS stands for Inward Wide Area Telecommunications Service these are the 800 numbers we can dial without the aid of a box. The 800 numbers are divided into 6 bands or service areas. These designate where the 800 number can be called from. Band 6 being the largest can be called from anywhere in the U.S whereas band 5 can only be called from the 48 connected states. This heirarchy works its way down all the way to band 1, and band 1 only includes the states immediately around it (the states touching it). The only restrictions apply to the fact that a 800 number cannot be called from the state that it originates from, and that is why services say 1-800-xxx-xxxx, unless you live in state XX and it then it has an alternate number to dial. They do this because why pay long distance charges for a local call? Stupid eh? Next are Intrastate INWATS. These you can only call from one state, and not many. These are distinctified by having a 2 in the last digit of the exchange. (example 1-800-NX2-XXXX). Another interesting fact on 800 numbers is that the NXX or first three digits tell where the business is located. All INWATS are billed also by the number of hours of calls they recieve, and not the number of callers. Buisnesses like this because each call is a few minutes long and this way they bypass the $1.35 for the first minute charge! Also businesses must have two lines minimum to have a 800 number, and all 800 numbers are on a roll-over. OUTWARD WATS or OUTWATS only can make outward calls! They are in the format 800-?XX-XXXX, and cannot be dialed without the aid of a box. The ? is a digit either 0, 1, or designated by a letter. The first digits on OUTWATS designate the places or areas where the company or business is allowed to call. These are popular with telephone solicitors since they recieve a major discount for the large volume of outgoing calls. Well that's about all for 800 number's now and I didn't include Wat's Extenders here since they deserve a class all by themselves! later...
