From: Libernet (John Logajan) To: All Msg #414, 15-Jun-90 09:09am Subject: Ecological Marijuana From: m2xenix!uunet!ns.network.com!logajan (John Logajan) Date: Mon, 11 Jun 90 00:41:44 CDT Here are some interesting "ecological" facts about Marijuana: (From the June 1990 Pragmatist, by Alan W. Bock) 1.) Hemp stalk has been used for fiber, the seeds are a source of oil, useful for paint, varnish, fine lubricating oils, and as a source of protein for human and animal consumption. 2.) Hemp fiber is 10 times stronger than cotton fiber. Cotton replaced hemp as the dominant fiber after the invention of the cotton gin. Machines have since been perfected for hemp fiber seperation. 3.) Hemp has few if any natual enemies -- as opposed to cotton, and it therefore requires both far less fertilizers and pesticides. (Half the pesticides used in the world are used on cotton.) 4.) Hemp requires less water for growth than cotton. 5.) One acre of hemp will yield as much paper as four acres of trees. (Half the worlds forests have been cut to make paper.) 6.) Fewer caustic/toxic chemicals are required to extract paper from hemp than from trees. 7.) Hemp seed is the second richest plant source of protein (after soybeans) and is much cheaper to cultivate. 8.) Hemp is the most efficient photosynthesizer -- it converts solar energy into biomass more efficiently than any other plant -- four times the potential of corn or kenaf. Thus it could compete economically with petroleum based fuels. 9.) "There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality ... In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume." -- chief administrative law judge for the DEA, 1988.
