Who here has one? I was recently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, which is basically schizophrenia + anxiety disorder + depression or manic depression (the former in my case).

I may have something, but screw going to some doctor.

I get really nervous in big party type crowds, and I hate talking to people other than my wife and my family. Maybe that's why I failed as a salesman.

So maybe social anxiety. Dunno, maybe just People Suck Syndrome.

Yeah, because the only people who have mental disorders are whiny 13-year-old goth girls that are only pretending to have them to get attention, obviously. Rolling Eyes

Well if that's a disorder then 90% of the human race should be popping pills.

I went to a party last Saturday night and I was hopelessly shy and reserved but that's only cause I don't really know how to initiate a better-than-pointless conversation in French. They seem less inclined to talk for hours on end about their jobs and "how do U no teh guy who is having teh PartAY?" than the English. Probably cause most French are unemployed gatecrashers. Surprised Cool

Here's a line that never fails to break the ice:

"Salut, je m'appelle James et j'aime me faire astiquer le goupillon par des petites salopes comme ta copine."

Never heard this one before, but "polish my sprinkler" doesn't leave too much to the imagination. God I love your language. Cool

Ok, I'll bite. I was treated for depression and anxiety for a couple years. I quit the meds cold turkey in July, 2004 and didn't feel any difference Surprised They did help tremendously the first year, though. I just reached a point where 1) I didn't need them as much and 2) I had become used to them to the point where they didn't affect me much.

I made it up. It's not a phrase in use AFAIK. And "goupillon" isn't "sprinkler". In fact I have no idea what it really means, but it definitely doesn't mean "sprinkler". Very Happy

I'm riddled with neuroses, obsessive behavior, anxiety, and spells of introspective depression (though not long or severe enough spells to be called bi-polar or deep depression), and bouts of manic insanity, where I do very preteen things like chop my hair off or abuse myself physically. I also tend to wander off into the grass directionlessly, staring at the sky a lot. And I'm ill a lot with IBS. But I try to be an existentialist about my problems, and adopt the attitude of a fighter at war with the world, making choices and facing up to them. Occasionally I accept emergency counseling or psychiatric sessions, but only when I really feel like killing myself. Beyond that, I'm as fit as a fiddle.

While I think there are serious mental conditions that should be treated with the same care as a serious physical accident, a lot of what gets diagnosed is just bullshit. Isn't ADD just absent mindedness when push comes to shove? Isn't IBS just nervous cramps? In the end of the day, much of what are called conditions by the pharm. companies are just personality traits or temperaments. Treating these conditions just seems to be way of creating a kind of post human the exists beyond pain or sensation. I wish we thought of psychedelics that way, heh.

I dunno, whatever, I'm babbling.

James

I agree with you for the most part (especially since, like so many other kids, i was misdiagnosed with ADD when I was younger), but I'm pretty sure that I, personally, was diagnosed correctly. When the doctor read me the list of schizoaffective symptoms, I was amazed to find out that pretty much all of them apply to me. I've been aware that I've had some sort of serious mental disorder for a while now, but it didn't become unbearable until late last year, which is why I decided to seek psychiatric assistance.

I've been being treated for depression for almost a year. It occurred to me to seek treatment when I was sitting in school one day, seriously entertaining the thought of suicide. I actually went so far as to plan it out in my head - I wanted to drive home at the end of the day, leave the car running inside the garage and basically gas myself. The only thing stopping me was the idea of hurting the people who care about me. I brought it up later that day (somebody actually laughed at me and called me "emo"), and a friend I trust (who also has experience with depression treatment) told me that those thoughts were a sure sign that I needed help (and medication).

I still have suicidal fantasies from time to time (I suspect that most people do), but that pervasive sense of bleakness is more or less gone. I haven't noticed any of the creative droughts or personality changes that some suggest are results of the medication.
