WS_FTP 7.5
![]()
The man behind this software is amazing to me because he exemplifies everything that is hateful and blockheaded about computer programmers, technical workers and other nerds and their inability to relate to the whole of any issue. They can nail parts of it fine - point 'em in any direction and they can fix a specific problem. But they're trained to relax their mental focus for the larger picture of anything, and thus are dumb as oxen when it comes to the inferential skills that lifted humans up from the apes and humanids. In the same vein, WSFTP Pro 7.5 is great in the new features it adds but misses the whole in two important ways. First, there is still no unification of the interface that makes any consistent sense. Second, the WSFTP development team hasn't yet realized that users want stability, logical operation and lack of time-wasting failures more than any other features. The new features, such as the stand-apart window that tracks the progress of each transfer, are welcome improvements upon the old. The new interface has more information and is more logical in its operation, but it still cluttered and often oblique to the task at hand. The time-saving features like transfer resume, etc. screw up too often, and are implemented in the brain-dead way that every geek implements a new feature - by assuming that you'll turn it off if you don't want it. There is no unifed theory of interface and there are still too many menus divided by organizational schema from ancient versions of this software. It's still the best all-around visual FTP client so far, but if anyone ever leans a serious shoulder into this task WSFTP is toast.
