Summoning

When black metal fired off its initial salvo of fast and furious, the second-wave bands who attempted to find the subsequent direction for the genre were confused and incoherent. From the mess of increasingly "extreme" tiers of music, bands like Graveland and Summoning instead chose an arch, neoclassical epic sound which rewarded them and their listeners with a plush depth of listening experience in both sensuality and intellectuality. These evocative pieces are meant to strip away reality for visions of a former time and the grandeur toward which a more romantic humanity once aspired.
