Infused with newfound confidence in technical skill and the logicality which propelled earlier primitive symphonies to prominence, Sepultura tackle an ambitious album which they almost pull off, but seem sometimes limited between a latent tendency toward harmony and a desire for extreme rhythmic assaults. This was a natural internal conflict for death metal bands at the time to have, but its presence here makes the stylistic whole of the album lose vital connections and make others which it does not fulfill. Its content unsteadily swings between the poles, with gruff-voiced abrupt and pummeling verses launching into the beginnings of a melodic bridge, or a maze of counterbalanced rhythms suddenly dropping into a speeding transitional riff with a trailing minor key resolution. As a result, this album is both majestic and unsound, like a ballet dancer serving hors d'ouevres on a subway train.
