Awkward combinations of stalwart riffing and rushing noise unlike the violent passage of water, Incantation make from old school death metal a detuned flow of textured noise. Bass-heavy vocals thrown far back in the mix with the surging counterparts of guitar and four-string low-end rumble create a sonic avalanche which overwhelms and then recedes, a cosmic tide of its own antagonism inflected in its variegation. Revolutionary at the time, this album of alert but morbidly compact death metal relies on melodic coherence achieved with recombination of riff patterns until a match is found, forming rotating symphonies of distortion in which solutions emerge from within and find equilibrium with the texture so far. Like a constant phrase in change, riffs rotate between possibilities and emerge as a winding diatribe of structure mutating to find routing to conclusion. Although there is often low-tech methodology employed where initially vast structures must fall, the combination of inventive musicianship and abstractly aliented songwriting creates a sensation of darkness and rage inherent to an empty universe.
