At the most basic edge of this fusion to be fully fleshed out in later albums, Godflesh are mixing the boxy songwriting framework of grindcore with a melodic punk band cutting violent industrial tracks, and the result is a more consistent album: vocals stay in the same aesthetic, songs have few ambiguous spaces, guitars are nearly constant and remain within a few layers. Consequently much of the complexity embedded in later Godflesh albums is here streamlined, and to experienced fans this sounds like a simple and sometimes directionless release. While some aspects of this are true, the aggression of the underground is present in this release, as well as some classic expressions of the loathing empathy this band exude. "Avalanche Master Song," "Ice Nerveshatter" and "Wounds" clearly reveal the direction and potential of what Godflesh unleashed on their first album.
