Disciples of Mockery, as a band composed of mostly ex-Incantation members, displays no stylistic tendencies which might surprise anyone familiar with first album Incantation but despite possessing an adept musicality, the band fails to unify its compositions into a clear voice of any meaning. Fast, flowing chromatic riffs are offset against Morbid Angel-style death-doom passages, with an intensity maintained and controlled by blasting drums and topped off with a with some above-average death growls. As could be expected given the lineup, all instruments are well-played and the riffcraft is strong- but, most of the songs lack any unique, unifying concept to set them apart from any of the other songs, and those that do have some unity tend to not go anywhere, but stagnate on a single emotion and unceremoniously end, having set the scene for the story but not narrating it. The second half of the album, which apparently contains newer songs, could have been great with a bit more editing, but only "Suspended in Desolation" and "Dogma" don't either lose focus or stagnate. There's a lot of raw potential here, but it's impossible to whole-heartedly recommend this album- this reviewer recommends "Onward to Golgotha", "The Forsaken Mourning of Angelic Anguish", and "Diabolical Conquest" instead.
