Deicide

One of the first death metal bands to find a sound which was both populist in appeal and alienated in musical approach, Deicide used pounding power chords and a precision-guided approach to drummer as a means of anchoring songs which featured a twisting and powerful atonal guitar style as well. After years of onslaughts from right-wing Christians, leftist animal rights commandos, and people who wanted to beat them up for being so violent, Deicide eventually caved in to public pressure and, after a black metal-influenced album called "Serpents of the Light" and a live release, began bashing out slowed-down groove rock to keep the consumers happy. Their original catalog, including the massively notable "Legion," remains a viable and contributing part of the metal scene.
