The first album from Vikernes works through longer songs of epic aesthetic in the changing of scene to reflect the unsaid in manipulation of the implied. Threads of melody merge together to form harmony which pulses on an offbeat to interact in natural counterpoint, breaking any idea in melody into its divergent parts and in the interplay of those revealing an ideal where ideas coincide. As violent as it is contemplative and adventurous, this album reveals a different side of Burzum in the more accessible material toward the end which presages the work on Filosofem. Unlike anything else, this album launched a revolution in black metal and in metal on both musical and political levels.
