Desiring to exist beyond the conventions of death metal at the time, At the Gates created developing melodies embedded as themes of a searing death metal album. Ideas swell and explore before change sweeps songs between diverse parts in which a diverse breadth of musical gestures come together in unison of concept. Shrieking distorted vocals give presence to lead playing slowly harmonizing into the roaring power chord torment which gave the genre its name. Not designed for brutality but epic presence, this album emanates the power of any progressive work that has also a conception of existential desire, with death metal introduced by neoclassical compositions and culminating in three live tracks from earlier albums.
