Drugs, alcohol, sex, religion -- these are all things that appeal to us. I will add others: money, power, popularity.These can be "pleasure scapegoats." Much as a scapegoat is a single goat into which a village (symbolically) loads its demons and fears, a pleasure scapegoat is a single pleasure into which you load all of the demands of an actual life. In other words, instead of having a fun life, you depend on the substance or sensation to do it for you.
If you cannot accept life as a whole, you're still caught in the good-versus-evil division that applies to methods, not goals, and thus is completely confused as to its cause-effect relationship. It leads to a path to nowhere interesting or fun.
