Humanism is destructive

12 08 11 - 19:42

From a well-known writer:

How did the West decline from its triumphal march to its present sickness? Have there been fatal turns and losses of direction in its development? It does not seem so. The West kept advancing socially in accordance with its proclaimed intentions, with the help of brilliant technological progress. And all of a sudden it found itself in its present state of weakness.

This means that the mistake must be at the root, at the very basis of human thinking in the past centuries. I refer to the prevailing Western view of the world which was first born during the Renaissance and found its political expression from the period of the Enlightenment. It became the basis for government and social science and could be defined as rationalistic humanism or humanistic autonomy: the proclaimed and enforced autonomy of man from any higher force above him. It could also be called anthropocentricity, with man seen as the center of everything that exists.

The turn introduced by the Renaissance evidently was inevitable historically. The Middle Ages had come to a natural end by exhaustion, becoming an intolerable despotic repression of man's physical nature in favor of the spiritual one. Then, however, we turned our backs upon the Spirit and embraced all that is material with excessive and unwarranted zeal. This new way of thinking, which had imposed on us its guidance, did not admit the existence of intrinsic evil in man nor did it see any higher task than the attainment of happiness on earth. It based modern Western civilization on the dangerous trend to worship man and his material needs. Everything beyond physical well-being and accumulation of material goods, all other human requirements and characteristics of a subtler and higher nature, were left outside the area of attention of state and social systems, as if human life did not have any superior sense. That provided access for evil, of which in our days there is a free and constant flow. Merely freedom does not in the least solve all the problems of human life and it even adds a number of new ones.

However, in early democracies, as in American democracy at the time of its birth, all individual human rights were granted because man is God's creature. That is, freedom was given to the individual conditionally, in the assumption of his constant religious responsibility. Such was the heritage of the preceding thousand years. Two hundred or even fifty years ago, it would have seemed quite impossible, in America, that an individual could be granted boundless freedom simply for the satisfaction of his instincts or whims. Subsequently, however, all such limitations were discarded everywhere in the West; a total liberation occurred from the moral heritage of Christian centuries with their great reserves of mercy and sacrifice. State systems were becoming increasingly and totally materialistic. The West ended up by truly enforcing human rights, sometimes even excessively, but man's sense of responsibility to God and society grew dimmer and dimmer. In the past decades, the legalistically selfish aspect of Western approach and thinking has reached its final dimension and the world wound up in a harsh spiritual crisis and a political impasse. All the glorified technological achievements of Progress, including the conquest of outer space, do not redeem the Twentieth century's moral poverty which no one could imagine even as late as in the Nineteenth Century. - Columbia

He spins it religiously, but the point is fair: when individuals are given absolute rights with no duties, selfishness is given full expression and the result is a self-consuming society.

Thinker who enjoys ideas
This is one of THE best sites on the web. Thinker who enjoys ideas - 12-08-’11 22:54
This site only justifies itself by offering this article link, which would take a lot of searching on my part to find...with no help from the oh-so-brilliant intelligentsia in the government/media. My thanks. Joshua - 12-08-’11 23:29
This is the irony of liberty. More liberty means more regulations. TD - 12-08-’11 23:31
It's control by making us feel like we are NOT being controlled. DOMESTICATION... Graveland - 12-08-’11 23:37
Do Something!
Similar values and goals leads to a healthy culture...and is in fact the basis of culture. Organized religion/materialism/multiculturalism have destroyed anything pertaining to culture in the West. Point is, if the readers of this site really care enough about this (which obviously they do), then some action must be taken for the future. I see a great deal of shared views that more or less resemble a "culture". The current version of "civilization" isn't worth saving, but the benefits that could come from the ideas here most certainly are. Do Something! - 13-08-’11 00:05
If anyone knows where I can find more articles of this nature, please, do share. Seriously. Joshua - 13-08-’11 00:15

Humanism in the Confucian sense: that humans are in control of their destiny within the natural order and not controlled by any divine presence. He had it figured out about 2500 years ago, what's your malfunction? Rusty Shackleford - 13-08-’11 11:52
A reactionary, badly researched opinion based on paranoia and half baked conspiracy theory.

Humanism is the only reason this pseudo-naziism is even permitted to lurk everywhere unchallenged.

Think before you post this sort of thing next time. Dave - 13-08-’11 16:18
"Similar values and goals leads to a healthy culture…and is in fact the basis of culture."

No it is the basis of fascism, intolerance, hatred and inequality. How is any of that healthy?

That's why it all has been thrown in history's dustbin by the pen and the sword. Most people will not stand for anything associated with the right today. Now that is progress!

Read some history or watch your history channel instead of consuming authoritative prejudice and racist pseudo-science hiding out in the margins of public life. Dave - 13-08-’11 16:52

Asperger's Activism
Where does this post mention race?

Maybe this site just hates humanism of all forms, and race is one subset.

People like Dave can only see the one thing they're programmed to fear however. Asperger's Activism (Email ) - 13-08-’11 17:20
Without a life
He's still a nigger... Without a life - 13-08-’11 18:29
Destructive? Who caused the most destruction last century? Oh that's right, your anti humanists and religious right. The century before that? Same thing. And before that? Same thing again. How about the beginning of this century? Well it looks like the anti humanists were off to their usual start whittling us down trying to make mankind an endangered species. Well we are not going to stand for it. Even if you do just sit around calling people ugly names on the internet. Dave - 13-08-’11 19:14
You mean like...nigger? Seriously, thanks for proving that you have nothing to do. dave - 13-08-’11 19:27
Asperger's Activism
I don't find much use in the n-word. It symbolizes anger and frustration to me.

I think it also does damage to honest nationalism. Asperger's Activism (Email ) - 13-08-’11 19:52

Uh, actually, "Dave" is trying intentionally to be offensive by trolling a site where no one takes him seriously. So I will intentionally be offensive to him. Dave is a nigger - 13-08-’11 22:48
Who is killing us now? Who are we to die? Oh, yeah, niggers. Dave - 13-08-’11 23:38
Anyone have anything to say about the article? Or are we just going to let Dave run the comment board? Nihilist - 14-08-’11 02:45
Is there anything to say about it?
I wasn't aware. Enlighten me. Is there anything to say about it? - 14-08-’11 11:02
That just proves my point about the right wing followers here. They don't want to understand the world. They just want a fascist leader to slap them into line and tell them intolerance and inequality are actually okay. Dave - 14-08-’11 12:08
Clearly you are all intellectually below me. As soon as all of you gain control over your egos, come and talk to me. Dave - 14-08-’11 12:09
Wrong again, Dave

disingenuous: Not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does
What about Napoleon or Robespierre? How about Stalin, Trotsky, King Leopold II, or Pol Pot? Honestly Dave, do you know ANYTHING about history? disingenuous: Not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does - 14-08-’11 12:44
'Read some history or watch your history channel instead of consuming authoritative prejudice and racist pseudo-science hiding out in the margins of public life.'

I suggest that you follow your own advise.

Do you still think that the European pagans still freely converted to Christianity en masse? If so, then nothing you say can be taken seriously, considering that you will not accept any evidence that falsifies your dogma. jackass.... - 14-08-’11 12:48
