New Social Campaign uses Twitter Monitor to Change the Conversation about People with Developmental Disabilities

CHICAGO, March 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "Retard." You've certainly heard it. Chances are you've even used it yourself. You're not alone. The word "retard" is used more than 24,000 times daily on Twitter. For the 200,000 people in Illinois living with developmental disabilities and their families, this is a matter that goes far beyond words.

That's why LifeMyWay has launched www.TheSocialChallenge.org, a public awareness and social media campaign that spurs Illinoisans to focus on creating a community of equality and inclusion for all.

The Social Challenge encourages people to take action by enabling them to engage Twitter users whose tweets contain the "R-word." The site is also a forum for people to share their personal stories and connect with one another via Facebook. Advocates for the The Social Challenge will get out into the community, asking Illinoisans to take the Challenge by vowing to help foster a society rooted in equality.

"The real disadvantage stems from the stereotypes and prejudices that society forces upon people with developmental disabilities," said Holly Roos, Canton mother of two children with Fragile X syndrome. "Every human being has strengths and weaknesses, and everyone has the right to be seen for who they are as a person rather than what they cannot do."

Jessica Martin is one young adult who shares her story. As a young woman balancing school, work, and an active social life, Jessica dares to ask people to give her the same respect she gives to them.

"I want to be seen as a human being, not as just another girl in a wheelchair," said Martin, who has Cerebral Palsy. "Get to know me – see what I have to offer. Know that my wheelchair helps me to do what I have to do in my daily life, but it doesn't define who I am as an individual."

TAKE THE CHALLENGE: "I will challenge myself and challenge others, joining LifeMyWay in creating a community rooted in equality."

Summary:

If you use a word we dislike, we will harass you and possibly out you as a "hater." We will use the opinions of others to make you look bad. We will use our numbers to scare anyone who might like you. You will be ostracized.

For what, again?

You mean... for stating the obvious:

Retarded people are stupid.

Retarded (or "mentally challenged") means your brain didn't fully develop. You are not as smart as others. In fact, compared to them, you are stupid. This is why kids intuitively call things "retarded" once they've seen what retarded means. Retarded means really slow kids. They may be friendly, but they disgust us in the same way perversity does. It's pure evolution and common sense: to be retarded, or a pedophile, means to be out of the evolution game. To be broken. To fail at adapting to reality.

People will always mock the retards because retards are a symbol of what often happens in life: something goes wrong, and the result is terrible. Usually, we destroy terrible results and try again. With retards, we're afraid to since we fear that we are snuffing a life like our own, and so we mock life itself by keeping around an inferior version of it and forcing everyone to pretend and hide their disgust.

If we were an honest civilization, we'd call that behavior retarded and get on with life instead.

Houllebecq versus Burroughs

28 03 11 - 08:03

Slightly older, but:

On Society

Houellebecq

I don’t like this world. I definitely do not like it. The society in which I live disgusts me; advertising sickens me; computers make me puke.

Burroughs

America is not so much a nightmare as a non-dream. The American non-dream is precisely a move to wipe the dream out of existence. The dream is a spontaneous happening and therefore dangerous to a control system set up by the non-dreamers.

The Future of Humanity

Houellebecq

Few beings have ever been so impregnated, pierced to the core, by the conviction of the absolute futility of human aspiration. The universe is nothing but a furtive arrangement of elementary particles. A figure in transition toward chaos. That is what will finally prevail. The human race will disappear. Other races in turn will appear and disappear. And human actions are as free and as stripped of meaning as the unfettered movements of the elementary particles. Good, evil, morality, sentiments? Pure ‘Victorian fictions.’ All that exists is egotism. Cold, intact, and radiant.

Burroughs

Man is an artifact designed for space travel. He is not designed to remain in his present biologic state any more than a tadpole is designed to remain a tadpole.

Youth and Dreams

Houellebecq

Adolescence is not only an important period in life, but that it is the only period where one may speak of life in the full sense of the word.

Burroughs

As a young child I wanted to be a writer because writers were rich and famous. They lounged around Singapore and Rangoon smoking opium in a yellow pongee silk suit. They sniffed cocaine in Mayfair and they penetrated forbidden swamps with a faithful native boy and lived in the native quarter of Tangier smoking hashish and languidly caressing a pet gazelle.

Influence

Houellebecq

I’ve lived so little that I tend to imagine I’m not going to die; it seems improbable that human existence can be reduced to so little; one imagines, in spite of oneself, that sooner or later something is bound to happen. A big mistake. A life can just as well be both empty and short. The days slip by indifferently, leaving neither trace nor memory; and then all of a sudden they stop.

Burroughs

I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it. My affections, being concentrated over a few people, are not spread all over Hell in a vile attempt to placate sulky, worthless shits.

Sex

Houellebecq

In a perfectly liberal sexual system, some people have an exciting erotic life; others are reduced to masturbation and solitude.

Burroughs

There is nothing more provocative than minding your own business.

Love

Houellebecq

Love binds, and it binds forever. Good binds while evil unravels. Separation is another word for evil; it is also another word for deceit.

Burroughs

We get some interesting mails, and some that are small writing projects:

What do this words written below mean to you as n nihilist?

hedonism
astrology
objectivism
elitism
celibacy
religion
justify

Hedonism: A placing of pleasure as the highest principle. It can take many forms: physical, intellectual, emotional and even moral. It is troublesome because of its a priori reorganization of priorities.

Astrology: Ancient system of finding order in the stars that determines some outcomes here on Earth. Only useful if you're a monist or mystical Platonist.

Objectivism: A tempting philosophical venture, except it makes no sense. We can believe in objective reality, but that in itself is not a philosophical system. The Ayn Rand version is called Social Darwinism, and its root is the idea that humans should respond to objectively measurable quanta in cause/effect form; in any case, Plato and Nietzsche are better guides.

Elitism: having high standards, what any sane person should do -- unless they lack confidence of their own worthwhile participation. Then they should Be Quiet.

Celibacy: Deliberately not having sex. A better option than casual sex; as a blanket indictment of one of life's pleasures, probably not wise.

Religion: Any over-arching truth which requires substantial use of inductive logic. Can be applied to anything from mystical traditions through scientific objectivism.

Justify: to use reversed cause/effect thinking. Normally, we see ourselves as observers between cause and effect; a person who causes an action, then searches for a socially acceptable reason to which to attribute it, so that others will accept it, is justifying her decision.

And then the tasty one:

Transcendental idealism

Transcendental Idealism: the system of thought which states the universe is thought-correlative or thought-derived, but in either case, operates on a level similar to that of thoughts. This places material concerns as secondary to variations in pattern or evolution or order or efficiency. It also places human concerns like aesthetics at a level above difficulty and inconvenience. Finally, it suggests an order on earth where beauty and ugliness (material concerns) are secondary to what they achieve in the invisible order of pattern, which is a ground for magical, beautiful, exceptional and lovely things to happen.

If there were "Aryans," they were potheads

20 03 11 - 13:05

Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world's oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany.

A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects.

It was found lightly pounded in a wooden bowl in a leather basket near the head of a blue-eyed Caucasian man who died when he was about 45.

"This individual was buried with an unusual number of high value, rare items," Russo said, mentioning that the objects included a make-up bag, bridles, pots, archery equipment and a kongou harp. The researchers believe the individual was a shaman from the Gushi people, who spoke a now-extinct language called Tocharian that was similar to Celtic. - MSN

This article is the most subversive thing I can imagine. First, it guts our conventional wisdom that European society was ignorant until about 1500 years ago. Second, it lays to waste the idea that marijuana smoking is recent. Finally, it points out that Caucasians wandered the world long before we thought they did. Wait until they prove that "Native Americans" were descendents of a Caucasian society which interbred with its servants, or that Europeans have an origin in India. Science has so many incomplete answers, yet wants us to think they're all definitive.

"Cost of slaves falls to historic low"

19 03 11 - 08:43

Sometimes, I think reality is trolling me:

Cost of slaves falls to historic low

(CNN) - If you have $90 then you could own your slave.

Depending on the kind of person you are that sentence could be at once shocking, saddening or darkly comical. However you might feel though, it’s the plain truth, says Kevin Bales.

The modern-day slavery expert explained to CNN that the current $90 rate for a human slave is actually at an historic low. Two hundred years ago, a slave cost about $40,000 in today’s money. The reason for this price slide: a massive boom in the world’s population, especially in developing countries, has increased the supply of “slaveable” people.

And this has basically turned a human being into a cheap commodity – Bales says like a Styrofoam cup that’s cheaply replaceable if damaged, “If they get sick, what’s the point of paying for medicine – it’s cheaper to let them die and acquire a new one than it is to help the ones you’ve got.

At this very moment, between 12 million and 30 million slaves are working around the world. - CNN

I'm going to Hell for laughing at this, but the absurdity boggles the mind. Two hundred years of crusading for equality, rights and anti-slavery, and slavery is now not only more popular than ever, it's cheaper! That means these slaves are disposable, which means slavery will truly be inhuman. When slaves cost the equivalent of a car today, they got treated with some care, like that car. But for the price of two electric shavers, who's going to care? Work them to death and then sell them to the cat food plants. It's just another way that modern society fails at achieving its aims, all while making such a good show of trying hard.

Jihad

19 03 11 - 08:19

From the mailbag:

do we really need to go to the level of jihad for making a point?

why cant i just live the way i enjoy, the way i enjoy watching some stupid channel? why should we be so concerned about how other people think and work...and in that context how is anarchism wrong if all we have to do is be self-righteous and do jihad.

Life is jihad. You either do the things that you know will bring good consequences, or you are acting as a force of stagnation, entropy, calcification and decay. Relevance is achieved by doing what makes sense and what makes life better. All actions have consequences; if not by direct physical response, by creation of patterns of similar events. You sit on your ass watching TV, and then others start to see that as acceptable, and soon you have an ass-sitting stupid-TV-watching culture. Your actions define your values. Your values are what other people emulate, either as positive means or as lowest common denominators.

Anarchism, liberalism, leftism, progressivism and other illlusory beliefs bring about bad consequences. They invoke good feelings, but don't care about the consequences beyond those feelings. As a result, they sew destruction and decay in their wake. To a nihilist, nothing has any meaning except its consequences on reality as known by its consistent natural laws of interaction. For that reason, anarchism/liberalism/etc are superfluous and as pointless as worship of dualistic deities.
