World Peace (Can't Be Done)

Some things are true, and some things just sound good. Anytime I turn on the radio I am reminded that most people are too simple-minded to handle more complications than catching stray dogs. They get some red-faced idiot to bluster on about justice and democracy, then some college-educated woman to lisp about world peace.

I've just got to laugh: world peace can't be done. It just can't exist. These people are saying the same thing in different ways. If we stop injustice and aggression, we can civilize everyone and there will not be murder, war or poverty. Everything will be peaceful and we'll enter a new age of progress.

What they forget is that conflict is realistic, while "peace" is an emotion. Some people are stupid and it makes sense to let smarter people oppress them. We need better nations to grow out of the ruins of dumb failed ones. "Peace" would mean we avoid conflict, but also any hope of change for something better. Why not "world stupor" instead?

Watch a public school teacher. They stop smart kids from beating on idiots, strong kids from taking toys from others, and socially adept kids from making fun of the clueless. Their goal: eliminate violence, cruel words, inequality. At the end of class they have five minutes to teach some history or math or -- wait! stop hitting him!

When your leaders and radio personalities bluster on about democracy, peace, love and all those other big happy concepts, you're being duped. They know they can sell those ideas and it makes them rich and powerful. In the meantime, you go off to war and your family gets a flag and medal (total cost: $49.32) when you die. Next year, there's another war.

The oceans are running out of fish. Little fresh water remains. Almost no natural land is left. Pollution is rampant. You saw about climate change on your television, but that's the tip of the iceberg. Most people are depressed because their jobs are meaningless and they have no rewards except buying things. Your culture is a moron and you're worried about "peace"?

There will never be world peace and I don't want it. Peace would mean that smarter people cannot beat up idiots and chase them away. Idiots would be respected and left to destroy anything they touched with their stupidity. Peace would mean that if we wanted to start up a great country somewhere, we couldn't because we'd step on some toes. Offend somebody. Invade some useless wreck of a land.

The one thing life has taught me is to always be realistic. We need conflict. Not every person is rational, and not every conflict is irrational. Through conflict change happens. Emotions are less important than consequences. "World peace" is an emotion, not a realistic proposition.

What matters is what happens. To my mind, it's more sensible to ask for consequences that let smart faster people get ahead than it is to spend our time worry because some weakling is getting bullied. World peace is an illusion and I'll never buy it.
