Parents may get new powers to check if people with access to their children have paedophile convictions.

But opponents argue the American law encourages acts of vigilantism and drives paedophiles underground, putting children at greater risk.

As far as the public is concerned the paedophile already is underground if they are not informed about him. Vigilantism is considered a threat to the establishment and thus a far worse crime than sexual abuse of children. The threat of vigilantism could effectively prevent a lot of the crimes occuring in the first place.
