Borrowers seeking bankruptcy reach record high

The number of British people seeking to declare themselves bankrupt rose to a record level last year.

Figures released today by the Ministry of Justice show that 53,114 people petitioned in court to become bankrupt in 2007, up from 52,717 in 2006 — more than double the number of people who sought bankruptcy in 2003.

People are a lot more likely to over-borrow than ever and the stigma of being bankrupt is far less at the same time.
