The figures suggest families are cutting back on meat and other expensive products in the wake of the financial downturn.

Retailers have been complaining for some time that shoppers have been ditching expensive brands in favour of cheaper products.

However, this is the first time that figures have shown shoppers are cutting back on the amount of food they are putting into their shopping baskets.

Meantime we are paying more than ever for our groceries - and our population is larger (in number). It should mean people are becoming slimmmer.
