Traces of toxic anti-cancer drugs in tap water could prove fatal to unborn babies
29 09 08 - 13:44 Traces of potentially dangerous medicines may be contaminating Britain's tap water and putting unborn babies at risk, scientists warned yesterday. There are growing concerns that powerful and toxic anti-cancer drugs are passing unharmed through sewerage works and tainting rivers and reservoirs.
The Government is taking the threat so seriously it has asked scientists to start testing untreated river water at the point it is abstracted for human consumption.
Doctors are most concerned about powerful 'cytotoxic', or cell-killing, cancer drugs. Around 50 of the cancer drugs are taken by 250,000 people in Britain.
