Consumers, who have already seen their energy bills shoot up by 15 per cent this year, will have to deal with a further 70 per cent rise and consistently high prices due to soaring oil prices, according to a report for Centrica, the owner of British Gas.

Jake Ulrich, Centrica's Managing Director, said that rising prices were likely to "continue rising for some time" and would "hit consumers hard," adding that the country might be returning to the era of "two jumpers instead of one" as families seek to cut back on household costs.

He said: "I think people will change the temperature they keep the house, they'll be more cognisant of energy waste, they'll buy better appliances."
