Variance Films to release acclaimed black metal doc
“UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US” theatrically in November

Variance Films is proud to announce the acquisition of US theatrical
rights for UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US, the acclaimed documentary from
directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell.  The film will open November
20 in NYC at Cinema Village and in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse, and
December 11th in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Sunset 5, with more dates to
be added throughout November, December and January.

An official selection at international film festivals including AFI,
Raindance, Athens, Gothenburg, and many others, UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES
US is the first documentary to go behind the scenes of black metal.
Originating in Norway, black metal is a scene that is equal parts
music genre, terrorist movement, and postmodern art scene.  Rising to
worldwide notoriety after a series of church burnings in Norway in the
early nineties, the media was quick to assign the “Satanist” label to
both the genre and founders—but the truth, as revealed in exclusive
and chilling interviews with the leaders of the scene (one in jail for
murder and arson), is far more complex.

“I’ll be honest- my personal musical tastes run far more towards
Radiohead than black metal,” said Dylan Marchetti, President of
Variance Films, “so that fact that I found this documentary
fascinating and completely engrossing from the first frame is a credit
to the directors—they’ve created a film so truly unique that you don’t
have to be familiar with the music, or even enjoy it, to appreciate
the film.  This is not a typical music documentary—it goes so much
deeper than that.”

“We couldn't be happier to have partnered with Variance Films on the
theatrical release of Until The Light Takes Us,” directors Aaron Aites
and Audrey Ewell said.  “They're not scared by the fact that it's as
much a social critique as it is a rock doc, and will see that it's
presented properly.  We were approached by a lot of companies who, due
to the flashy subject matter, wanted this to be an exploitation
release, and we had to pass.  But Dylan and his team truly understand
and respect the film, and we are pleased to be working with Variance
in bringing this film to a much larger audience.”

The deal was negotiated between Marchetti on behalf of Variance Films
and the filmmakers.

News: Until The Light Takes Us was awarded the Golden Athena for best
documentary at the Athens International Film Festival, taking place in
Athens, Greece last week.

We've added a festival screening, scroll below to find the Helsinki,
Finland listing.

We've announced an afterparty for our London screening Oct 7 with
Raindance Film Festival, scroll below for details.

We're announcing several more US cities that have been confirmed for
our US Theatrical release, scroll below for details.  Many more being
added continuously.

STREET TEAM:  We are putting out a call to arms for street team
volunteers in all US cities.  We need your help to get the word out on
the film!  MOST especially if you are located in a confirmed city -
please send us a NEW EMAIL with your city in the subject line.  The
sooner, the better!

To all those in European countries, Canada, Mexico and South America
where we do not yet have a screening: we appreciate all your support,
feel free to also sign up for the street team - we log all this and
will get back to you once we have distribution in your city.  We
receive countless emails from people in France, Germany, Spain, Italy,
and Mexico (and others, don't worry if you're in another country,
we're working on all of it), we have made note of all of this and will
get there as quickly as possible.

Posters: We have just made 27x40 posters and they are beautiful.
Website's about to get overhauled and you'll be able to see them on
there.  We've received many requests to make posters available to buy,
and are taking some with us to sell in Europe.  They're REALLY heavy,
so supplies will be extremely limited.  If you will be at one of our
European screenings, you can email us by Oct 3rd to reserve one.
Again, send a NEW EMAIL.  Responses to this email will not reach us.
The price will be 14 Euros/British pounds.  We are not yet set up to
take pre-orders for posters in the US.  The price will be $20 plus $6
shipping.  This may seem expensive, but they're not cheap to make, and
this is less expensive than most posters of this type.  As an added
bonus, you'll know that they were rolled up and sent off with love
(and probably lots of grumbling because I'm very bad at manual labor).
US order fulfillments will not begin until early November (because
we'll be in Europe).  And it may take longer if figuring out how to do
a Paypal Merchant account and tax issues takes a long time.  We'll let
you know once we figure out how to handle international orders.
Breath-holding not recommended.  We're filmmakers not business people,
and have very limited time.

Again, STREET TEAM: Please email us at untilfilm@gmail.com with your
city in the subject line.  **If you have done this previously, there
is no need to do it again, it will only confuse things.  If you're not
sure if you've done this already, do it again ; )

THANK YOU to all who have supported us and our film, and who continue to do so.

Upcoming Festival and European dates:

Wow, there's going to be a release here in the culture void of central Michigan. Well, unless you consider hippies, "modern art" and hipsters culture.

There is certainly something rotten in the state of Norway: Satanism, the killing of “faggots”, the burning of churches, and lead singer Dead shooting his brain out with a shotgun, prompting an interviewee to opine how “Dead was dead in a bed”. It can only be one thing: Black Metal.

This documentary concentrates on some of the key players in the Black metal underground scene and investigates the scene’s influences, characters, art and the often-disturbing belief systems that are present in this morbidly engaging world.  We hear the case against Christianity and its inherent disrespect for other cultures.  American imperialism, consumerism and the tabloids also get it in the neck.

Often the music takes a back seat to the sensational events that are discussed. But there’s enough to sate anyone from the darkside. The main Norwegian bands featured are Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, a wave of metal acts that take their cue from metal veterans Venom and Celtic Frost – with that regimented sound of distorted guitars, double-kick drums and the kind of vocals that make one want to eat one’s own ears.

A healthily objective viewpoint is achieved by New York directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell, who take matters pretty seriously, though at times, it’s the interviewees who seem to find the bizarre incidents almost amusing.

This one's quite long, sorry about that.  We try not to bombard you with updates, so now there's lots of news!

We'll start with Europe:  Thank you so much to everyone who came out and saw the film and helped us out across Europe.  There are a few more European festival dates still to come, and we're talking to several distributors there.

Nov 12 & 14 - Rokumentti Film Festival - Joensuu Finland www.rokumentti.com
Nov 25 - Antwerp, Belgium - www.cinemazuid.be
Dec 1st - Cine-City Film Festival - Brighton, England - www.cine-city.co.uk
FACEBOOK INVITE WITH ALL INFO ON EUROPEAN DATES:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20217005803#/event.php?eid=144727319131

Now we're back in the US, raring to get our theatrical release under way.

A few notes:
* NY release date has been changed to Dec 4th.  Still at Cinema Village on 12th St.  Directors present for Q & A for the opening weekend evening screenings.  We'll also be there in L.A Dec 11 and 12.  Again, NY run starts 12/4.

* NY Launch party is Nov 18th at the new Knitting Factory in Williamsburg.  Our good friends in Papa M (Dave Pajo and Matt Jencik), Soft Circle (Hisham Bharoocha), Rain Machine (Kyp Malone) and Kevin Barker are playing the show and celebrating the release of the film with us.  This is a show only, film run begins Dec 4 in NY.  We hope you can join us.
Invite: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20217005803#/event.php?eid=166978110278&index=1

* Posters are now available on our website.  Website has also been updated, including new trailer.

I'm attaching a national flyer for anyone who is able to print it and hit these shows or any others:

http://www.killertours.com/search/genre/metal
This site shows you the metal shows coming up within 50 miles of your zipcode.  Pretty nifty.  The tour below (Marduk, with visas this time) is hitting a lot of cities before us and it would be stellar if people could flyer them.  Tour dates
http://www.crustcake.com/2009/10/nachtmystium-touring-with-marduk.html

And of course, metal shows aren't the only good places to flyer, but they definitely don't hurt.  If you live in a confirmed city (see below), write us and we will send you a flyer that is specific to the run there.  If you're in NY, LA or Chicago, there's also ohmyrockness.com with non-metal show listings.

Several more US cities have been confirmed for our US Theatrical release.  Many more being added continuously.  If your city isn't yet listed or is unconfirmed, please consider calling your local indie theaters and asking if the film is coming there and very very nicely letting them know that there is a community of people who hope it comes - nothing more, just that - it really does help, as long as it's very polite and concise.  Canada - ditto.

News involving Ice Screens: Our Canadian Premiere will be in Winnipeg, Canada, this winter.  Date is TBA, but the big news is that the film will be projected onto a giant wall of ice.  Um.  Awesome.  Anyone who wants to be involved in this event, please let us know.

STREET TEAM:  We are putting out a call to arms for street team volunteers in all US and Canadian cities.  We need your help to get the word out on the film!  MOST especially if you are located in a confirmed city (WE NEED HELP IN ALL CONFIRMED CITIES) - please send us a NEW EMAIL with your city in the subject line.  Thank you very much!

To all those in European countries, Asia, Mexico and South America where we have not yet held a screening: we appreciate all your support, feel free to also sign up for the street team - we log all this and will get back to you once we have distribution in your city.  We receive countless emails from France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Scandinavia, Mexico and so many more, we have made note of all of this and will get there as quickly as possible.  Australia: the film IS coming out there, I'm so sorry that we don't have a release date yet.  Stay tuned!

Posters: We have just made 27x40 posters and they are beautiful.  The price will be $20 plus $6 shipping in the US and Canada, orders can be placed on our website.   If you'd like to make an international order, send us an email.  We'll figure it out.  A few orders were placed with an incorrect lower postage amount - these orders were honored as placed and have gone out, and the site has been fixed.  We can't take orders for NY state, but email us and we'll see what we can do.  We'll have some at the party on Nov 18th.

Again, STREET TEAM: Please email us at untilfilm@gmail.com with your city in the subject line.  **If you have done this previously, there is no need to do it again, it will only confuse things.  If you're not sure if you've done this already, do it again ; )

THANK YOU to all who have supported us and our film, and who continue to do so.
