In listening to various death metal albums, there seems to be two types of dm out there, the uptempo death metal bands (speed metal based) like Krisiun and Vader and mid-tempo death metal (groove based) like Incantation's Onward to Golgotha and Archgoat's Angelcunt. Do you think bands who play really fast death metal are posers without any substance to their music? I've listened to Krisiun, they're very fast but they give me the zz's.

Most great death metal albums use tempo changes as a compositional tool, Onward to Golgotha being one of the best examples of this tendancy.  This doesn't mean there haven't been some great albums with very few changes of pace, Deicide's Legion for one, however most bands that rely heavily on grindcore's rhythmic contributions to metal get old very fast.

I think there are virtues to both. If a more speed metal based style is done well it can have its charm, i think Masscre would be a good example of this.

If tempo changes are done poorly then the music can sound very disjointed.

I must agree with Negru Vodă,  that fast metal isn't easily likable, but Benighted from France play great high tempo death metal. I guess most death metal fans know the band already though ...
Shouldn't give you the zz's at least.

I listened to that band once, sounds like Pantera after smoking meth.

How'd you classify a band like Obituary then ?

Obituary could probably fall into the mid-tempo category, obviously. The reason why I posted the first message is because, I wanted to  find out if there is a band out there that could perfectly fuse both substance and speed together. I've been searching for a death metal band that possess these two elements. Hopefully, the suggestions of Negru voda and dauden may help.
