Hipster, n. A person who manipulates image through passive aggression in order to conceal their ordinariness.

Why are some of you so concerned with hipsterism?
(by the way, that link was funny)

Another one:

Hipster: "I don't judge by looks."

Nihilist: "Then how do you drive?"

The only thing we all say here is "I liked their early stuff better" since most bands do their best work early on.

Because hipsters make a fucking horrible dissonance next to real dissidents.

The definition of a hipster is too vague. What qualifies as hipster fodder is impossible to define as nearly anything can appeal to hipsters under the right circumstances. Also, if you purposefully avoid or stop listening to bands because of they are known to hipsters, you are falling into that same mentality.

I think the definition should include this:

Surface versus substance.

Hipsters look at the surface, and are actors who pretend to be profound to cover up the fact that they don't understand the substance.

They are parasites who take on the appearance of understanding an artform, and use it to justify their own lives, and manipulate it for their own ends, replacing it with an inferior substitute.

Image over substance.

A hipster simply tries by any meaning to find a meaning to his/her own execrable life by incorporating elements from a determined trend into his/her own life.

Which represents 90% of the human population at this moment.

The essence of balance is detachment. To embrace a cause, to grow fond or spiteful, is to lose one's balance, after which, no action can be trusted. Our burden is not for the dependent of spirit.

I'd be temped to say that the crusty 2-track black metal fan is a hipster, no?

Depends on who you are and if you respect yourself.
