When rock got stagnant in the late 1960s, one group broke away from the flower power by using jazz styles and classically-influenced song structures, creating the most intricate phrasal arrangments in rock to date. Although this represented a high point for rock's musicianship, ultimately it overwhelmed many audiences, who gratefully embraced punk in the mid-1970s, ending the prog rock era.
