One style of death metal did not, as was widely practiced, eschew the use of muted strumming to produce buffeting thickly percussive chords; this style was fully death metal, but had an exponential take on speed metal technique to make a fearsome sonic style that was almost unrecognizable as music. Many of these bands also used a semi-parodic, more intense version of both speed metal's cryptic song structures and its lyrics heavy on Latinate and technical language. The result is literally an aural assault, but one that was widely popular among those who work in the cities.
