As soon as black metal reared its ugly head, a few prescient musicians decided to adopt the new sound to the same old heavy metal, and as a result, made a fortune - if they could stay out of jail. Heavy metal and black metal hybridized produces a style that is like fast melodic heavy metal with the rasping vocals of black metal and the aggressive percussion of death metal. It is important because it occurred both before, and after, the black metal movement, as bands adapted the prototypical forms of that genre to known formulae of success.
