Where most death metal was all-ahead-go, Florida death metal mixed funeral cadences and dirgelike, tugging riffs that seemed to have been jerked straight out of the bogs and sinkholes of the Everglades. Its predominant feature was the use of almost operatic presentation of choruses, which in ceremonial form presented the content of each song as if shocked by its content. Its technique has an even mixture of the unsubtlety of punk, the groan of industrial, and the insistent ear-bending intensity of droning rock music. This was probably the first type of death metal to be widely recognized, although it followed several predecessor styles. Like many of the categories on this site, "Florida" is a description of the sound originated in a geographical place, and does not imply origin in that place. Florida death metal is a worldwide phenomenon.
