Out to take on the world! An Exclusive Interview from METAL FORCES for MBI! Bernard Doe talks to Scott 'NOT' Ian and Charlie Benante As Anthrax prepare their bid for world domination in 1987 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MF=Metal Forces Interviewer Bernard Doe Scott=Scott 'NOT' Ian -guitarist Charlie=Charlie Benante -Drummer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Though nothing can match the sheer horror and grief suffered by METALLICA when Cliff Burton was killed in Sweden, a certain amount of sympathy should go to ANTHRAX - METALLICA'S opening act on their European tour, brought to an abrupt ending by the tragedy. For up to that point, the tour had been as much as a success, if not more so, for ANTHRAX as it had for METALLICA. And with nearly two thirds of the tour having to be cancelled, the band obviously lost out on a big chance to increase their rapidly growing popularity on this side of the ocean. This was followed by the last minute cancellation of the Aardschok Festival in Holland, and once again ANTHRAX had missed out on exposure to European hordes through no fault of their own. But as we roll into 1987 ANTHRAX are about to unleash another assault on the metal world with the release of their third album "Among the living". I spoke to guitarist Scott 'NOT' Ian and drummer Charlie Benante to get their views on recent events and find out more about that new album. MF: It's been quite a while now since the METALLICA tragedy, but looking back, how do you feel about the whole incident? Scott: "Well, I've obviously had a lot of time to think about what happened and really there was nothing that could have been done because it was an accident. At least nobody else was hurt and things have carried on. I guess if you're religious you can look at it as though someone wanted Cliff somewhere else and his time had come to go. I was one of the first guys to greet METALLICA when they first came to New York and we go back a long way; we had some great times together with Cliff and it's really hard to actually believe that he's gone." MF: When METALLICA had to pull out of the tour, did you ever consider carrying on on your own? After all ANTHRAX were going down as well as METALLICA at many venues up to that point. Scott: "Yeah, there was talk at one point that we might have gone on; not doing the same shows, but instead do a run through Germany and some of the Spain dates. But we were just sitting around in Copenhagen and we decided that we would much rather go home because it was really weird circumstances that we were in and I don't think we were in the right frame of mind to carry on with a tour like that." MF: What were your feelings on the tour as far as it got? Obviously you were pleased with the audiences reaction to ANTHRAX? Charlie: "I thought it was amazing really. Especially the London show at Hammersmith, the crowd were so into it." Scott: "It was the best tour we could have asked for. It really did work out great for us, because even though we didn't have a full sound or all the lights, and was restricted for room on the stage, every night we came on it was sold out and we had great crowds everywhere we went. It's gonna make it easier for us in '87 when we come back to headline." MF: Do you think you were treated fairly on the tour? The sound you had at Hammersmith was pretty poor to say the least. Scott: "You can't say its fair or unfair because METALLICA are the headlining band and it's their show; realistically we didn't expect anything. Even if all the equipment blew just five minutes before we were due on, it didn't matter, because we'd just go on with the attitude of 'were here to play and have a good time' and hopefully the crowd will love us, which fortunately they did. People could see that, they realised we didn't have the sound or light but every night we went over just as well with all the crowd cheering for us and going nuts; and really thats what counts. Scott: "When we come back as headliners we will have the sound and lights and we'll have more space to move around and I'll really be able to break free on my skateboard and send it zooming around the stage!" MF: Lets talk about your new album, "Among the living". How has the recording been going? Charlie: "Everything is going so quickly and it's sounding amazing. In fact it sounds so good it's pretty scary." MF: You played a new track, "I am the Law", on your tour. Would you say thats a typical track from the album? Scott: "Well, "I am the Law" was the first track we wrote for the new album and that helped open new doors for us for the rest of the material. I wouldn't say it's a typical song because "I am the Law" is pretty much a steady thing all the way through, whereas a lot of the other stuff has a lot more tempo changes in it and are much heavier and faster." MF: I understand that "Among the Living" is gonna be a lot heavier than the "Spreading the Disease" album. Was it your intention to make it heavier or is it just the way it's turning out? Charlie: "It's a little of both; each of us wanted it to be that way and it's turning out really well. Each song on this album, to the listener, will probably make them break a sweat!" 'Headbang-wise I'm sure!'-ed MF: I read somewhere that "Spreading the Disease" was toned down to help you secure a major record deal. Is that true? Scott: "We didn't purposely tone it down, I think it was more our state of mind when we were writing that album, because at the time METALLICA had just signed to Elektra and RAVEN were with Atlantic and we were just thinking "Wow, we've gotta get a major deal too." So I guess in the back of our minds we felt that maybe it shouldn't be all out death or thrash. "I think the heaviest track on that album is "A.I.R." which we actually wrote when we were in the studio and that's where I wrote a lot of the S.O.D. stuff, so looking back I think it's maybe a shame that we didn't include some of the heavier stuff for the ANTHRAX album." MF: What is the new album cover going to be like? Charlie: "Actually the album cover is hard to explain. But what you have is people on the cover that are walking in a particular direction with their heads down and there's a man in the middle; he's supposed to be something like the Anti-Christ and what he's doing is taking off his top-hat, looking straight at you smiling, and you can see a little horn coming up out of his head." Scott: "The whole concept of 'Among the Living' is based on a character called Randall Flag from a Stephen King book 'The Stand' and he's sort of like the devil walking around as a human but they never actually say he's the devil, he's just a guy whose got power over other people." MF: Any particular reason for recording the album in Florida? Charlie: "Yeah, the band has been working really hard in '86 - we played something like 110 shows - and we just felt it would give us a break to record the album in a warm, healthy environment." MF: Do you still plan to release "I am the Law" as a 12" single with the Judge Dread sleeve? Scott: "Yeah definitely. Island UK have been in heavy negotiations with IPC magazines about the 12" single and the possibilities of an animated video for it." MF: Charlie Benante is of course bassist Frank Bello's uncle. So what's it like Charlie, having your nephew playing in the band? Charlie: "Oh Frankie's a great bass player. He's always been living here with me since he was smaller and I've always been playing drums, so throughout the years he kinda grew up liking what I like. First of all he started playing guitar, but about five years ago he switched to bass. We used to play together all the time - just jamming - until we got a good feel for everything, and then i joined ANTHRAX. Charlie: "Frankie got to know all the band really well and became one of the crew, then when Danny Lilker exited the band, Frankie seemed like the obvious choice as a replacement. Anyway it's worked out really well - he's pretty nutty on stage too." As I write, recording of the album is now complete and the band is off to the Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas to mix the album which is expected to be released in late March/early April. The Full track listing will be as follows:- Side One: "Among the Living", "Caught in a mosh", "I am the Law", "Efilnikuftsin", "Skeleton in the closet". Side Two: "Indians", "One World", "Horror of it all", "Imitation of Life". This February ANTHRAX will be back in Europe to play a number of headlining gigs in Germany together with two or three shows with METALLICA including the re-scheduled Aardschok Festival in Zwolle, Holland on February 8. Finally on the 15th of February ANTHRAX headlines the Hammersmith Odeon in London with special guests METAL CHURCH and possibly CELTIC FROST. To coincide with the tour Island will be releasing the "I am the Law" 12" single which on the 'B' side will include "I'm the man" (A heavy metal rap song!) and a track from Buddy Love Bomb and the Lounge Band from Hell (Fuckin funny or what?! -TR/editor) which will be a three part thrash epic featuring 1) "Death Metal Thing", 2) "Not", 3) "Joe Allen why are you here?". There can be no doubt that 1987 will be the year that ANTHRAX break bigtime and long overdue success it will be too. There you have it! The Legacy of ANTHRAX! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: A R T I C L E S !! From members of MBI (c)87 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Alice Cooper is Back December, 1986 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From Battle Cry Publications, Chino, California Nov./Dec. Issue 1986, Page 3 "More Dangerous Than Ever" Alice Cooper is back! Its been 13 years since he first made the big time Rock news singing about making love with dead bodies, hatcheting baby dolls, and half swallowing snakes, in concert. Now Alice Cooper is making a determined and much publicized comeback with a new record album, "Constrictor," and MTV video, "The Man Behind The Mask," from Friday The 13th part 6. Alice's real name is a Vincent Furnier. How did this minister's son from Phoenix, Arizona become "Alice?" While attending a seance with members of his band, a demon manifested itself claiming to be the spirit of a long dead witch named Alice Cooper. The demon told Furnierif he would take the name as his own and allow the spirit to possess him, he would become one of the most famous Rock stars of all time. Even though alcoholism nearly killed him and Furnier's original group split up long ago, Alice Cooper is coming back with a vengence. The following comments from Faces Magazine Dec. 1986, page 26, clearly show that the demon that possessed Furnier many years ago is still in control today. Notice how Vincent Furnier speaks about alice as if it was an entirely different person: "I don't put any limitations on Alice. He just does what he wants. I just play Alice. He comes up with the ideas. I think the future of Alice is the future of America. Alice is back and it's going to be for a long time. Whether people like it or not, Alice is back, and he's more dangerous that ever." Dee Snider, the burly transvestite singer for the Heavy Metal band "Twisted Sister," deserves the credit for bringing Alice Cooper back into the limelight. Snider wrote a song especially for Alice called, Be Chrool to Your Scuel. Alice sang it with Dee, and also appeared in the video for the tune (which was banned by MTV). As a teenager, Dee Snider worshiped Alice Cooper as his god. "Alice Cooper is my hero. I used to have this picture of Alice over my sink, and every morning I would bow down to it." Dee Snider in Faces Magazine, Dec. 1986, page 24. Cooper's new record album cover shows a slimy and revolting boa constrictor sliding out of the singer's open mouth, even as its coils tighten around his throat. Do you see the subliminal message here? Satan (the serpent) is speaking through Alice Cooper. Alice is totally under the control of the Devil's chokehold. Here are some lyrics from Alice Cooper's new song, Simple Disobedience: "Now all your complex little schemes That form your master plan Are scrumbled up and that is something You just don't understand A cyclone of confusion Rips right through your holy troops The very thing that weakens you Gives power, gives me juice..."
